Sometimes you just have to Improvise....

Last month when

I was doing a photo shoot

for a Manufacturer

of a Christmas Mantle....

I was in need of something

to go up on the wall

on either side of my wreath....

There was no time to shop as the

photos were needed ASAP....

so taking on the challenge

as a true crafter

I went into my studio

make something....

I really wanted to put candles on either side

so I created Candle holders

out of several layers of Mat Board and

Eileen Hull's Caddy Die

Then I mixed ESF Black Perfect Paint

with ESF Pearl Metallic Powder

to paint them.

I used Velcro Brand Poster Hangers

so that I would not have to put holes in my walls...

They turned out great and worked

perfectly for the Photo Shoot....

(Caution: While these are made from Mat Board I would not actually use them to burn candles on; they are for decorative purposes only!)

Creative Headband Holder....

Here is a Creative way to keep

them all in one place....

I used a Paper Mache Dress Form which I painted

with Earth Safe Finishes Perfect Paint and Shimmers...

Then I used Velcro Brand Press and Close Fasteners

on the shoulders to place trim which hold the extra

headbands when not being used....

and to hold the flowers and other embellishments for the headbands;

The embellishments and headbands are interchangeable by using

Velcro Brand Fasteners

which make for dozens of combinations!

Don't have a Dress Form....be CREATIVE

and see what you can use for a Headband Holder.....

Mat Board, a Picture Frame, Foam Core,

Dowel Rods, Plastic Canvas....use what you have

and Be Creative!

While looking for a garter to match my daughter's prom dress we came up with nothing that matched....last year I made her garter and this year I decided to start with a pre-made inexpensive garter...her dress was black with shades of teal and blues...I bought a white garter (as I could not find any black ones)...

I got out my Earth Safe Finishes Lampblack Colorant

Put a dropper of ESF Lampblack Colorant and a 1/2 cup water into a plastic cup.

Dipped the garter in.

Covered it completely.

Took it out to dry. Once dried it needed to be heat set, using an iron works best but I did not want to iron this as it was a bit delicate so I used a heat gun to heat set it.

I added shimmer fabric and ribbon.

It matched perfectly and was so easy to get the right color....

Look at that shine....

I textured a piece of Makin's No Bake Polymer Clay with a stamp,

added some Earth Safe Finishes Metallic Powders and

left it with Nancy at the Earth Safe Finishes Studios.

Nancy was testing how Earth Safe Finishes Eco Epoxy

would brush onto surfaces and brushed some onto

the clay piece I had left, look at that shine....

so easy and beautiful!

Eco Epoxy...use it for everything....

Having a teenage daughter....

we have been making a lot of rings;

with all kind of thing like:

Buttons, Fabric, Beads, Felt, etc.

However we were having a problem

with finding a glue that worked

to hold anything to the ring bases....

I have been using my Eco Epoxy for

a lot of different things but had not tried it

as a glue....so I grabbed it and applied

it to the fabric flower pictured above

and glued it to the ring base....

Amazing....it worked fabulous....

now we are busy making rings again!

Eco Epoxy....does it all!

I also used Earth Safe Finishes Teal Shimmer

to the brad in the center of the ring....

which was just the right

finishing touch!

I cut out the face features from black tissue paper

and applied them to the inside of the pumpkin with

EcoPoxy after 48 Hours

Here are pictures after

48 hours...

the thick aspplication still has some cloudiness but

all of the tackiness is gone and

look at that SHINE!

Once it is totally clear I will take

some more pictures and

try to take them close-up so you can really see the

glossy shine.

Here are the medium application pieces;

again no tackiness and thi shine is awesome...

just a tinge of cloudiness left...

so I will take pictures of these again when that is gone!

The light application is shiny with no tackiness,

this picture looks like there is some cloudiness but

there isn't...

these will make wonderful pendants and pins!

For the life of me I can not take a good picture of this

flower, so I am going to have to make

a journal and show you the end result....

the EcoPoxy gave it the

stiffness it was lacking....

if I had used the EcoPoxy full strength

instead of watering it down I am sure

there would be more shine.

I am loving this EcoPoxy and to think

it cleans up with water...Perfect!

EcoPoxy the Next Day

Here are pictures of the

EcoPoxy after 8 hours from initial application

this is the thick application,

still a bit creamy but oh so shinny...

the pictures here really do not do the EcoPoxy justice!

this is the medium application, still a bit creamy...

with a lot of shine!

this is the thin coat...still tacky but

the beautiful shine is there!

here is the vintage paper flower...

it is really hard to see from this picture that

the flower has stiffened up a bit, it is still damp...

remember I dipped this in the left over EcoPoxy

with water added to it....

Now after 24 hours....

the thick application is still a bit creamy but oh the shine

is coming through...

the medium application is also still a bit

creamy but the shine is also there....

the thin application is nice and shinny and

the tackiness is gone.

the vintage flower is dry and stiff,

I crumpled it up a bit and

it really holds it's shape nicely...

I will post more pictures tomorrow so you can see the results....

Playing with EcoPoxy

When I first got some EcoPoxy

I was afraid to try it

as I did not want to ruin it or waste it....

So tonight I decided to just mix up a small amount

(about a 1/2 ounce) and try it....

WOW did I find that a little goes along ways....

I had some Makin's Clay textured shapes all

cut and dried....

so I added Earth Safe Finishes Metallic Powders

to give them some color.

Then I mixed my Earth Safe Finishes EcoPoxy

and waited 15 minutes...

I applied it heavy on some pieces...

Medium on some pieces...

and very light on some pieces...

Then there was still some left and I did not want it to go to waste

so added a couple drops of water and I grabbed....

one of the vintage flowers I make

using the medium Sizzix Scalloped Circle Die

and crumpled it up into the left over

EcoPoxy....

Now I will take pictures tomorrow to show how these are all drying...

knowing the heavy covered pieces will take much longer...

I did it this way so I could see the different results and share them here.

I was asked by my good friend and designer Eileen Hull

to create a project showcasing her New Sizzix ScoreBoard Cake Die.

I wanted to do something totally different than a cake with the die

so I created a flower that doubles as a

Recipe Holder!

I took the cake base and covered it with masking tape, inside and out.

Then I used my finger to apply

Earth Safe Finishes Translucent Shimmer Copper,

it gave it the aged planter look I was going for.

I used the plate part of the die to make a flower with the addition

of some tissue paper and the small flower from the die.

Then I made a Shimmer Spray using

Earth Safe Finishes

Colorant, Pearl Powder and water

to spray the flower and give it a

bit of sparkle!

Here is a photo of the new furniture at the mall with one of the transformed trash cans

and one of the planters.

Don't they look fabulous...

As stated in the previous post the trash cans and planters were

transformed using Earth Safe Finishes

thus making them a perfect addition with the

new furniture and carpet through out the mall.

What can you transform?

I am the Director of Operations for the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria MN

We are in the process of doing major updates throughout the mall.

New furniture was on the list but along with the furniture would come

the need for new trash cans and planters,

in looking at the trash cans and planters we had

the only thing wrong with them was they were

out of date...always thinking GREEN

I felt I could transform them with with the help of

Earth Safe Finishes.

Here is what the trash cans looked like

We sprayed them with 2 coats of

Black Perfect Paint.

We added Translucent Shimmers in shades of

Copper, Gold Sparkle, Gold Pearl and Pearl

to the sides and then 2 coats of Marine Varnish.

I ordered 2 gallons of the Black Perfect Paint

and Marine Varnish...

amazingly good paint really does make a difference!

We were able to do 2 coats of paint and varnish

on 9 large trash cans and 9 18" - 20" plantersa

and 3 mall directories

using less than 1 1/2 gallons...

I ordered a gallon of each of the Translucent Shimmers

and as the picture above shows used just

ounces of each color...proving again

good paints and finishes go along way!

In a couple days I will post pictures

of the trash cans and planters

with the new furniture!

which I made into a little purse.

I took the Scoreboard painted it with

Earth Safe Finishes Shimmer Translucent Emerald

to give it beautiful shimmer and color.

Added some sparkle with

Clearsnap Daisy Daze Design Adhesives and Glitter

Used Mulberry Paper for the sides and ribbon for a handle.

Above is a picture of it open, it is just the right size

for your drivers licence and some cash!

Sizzix ScoreBoard Frame

Above is what I created with the ScoreBoard Frame Die...

this was so quick and simple to put together...

The ScoreBoard Dies actually cut mat board and scores it at the same time....

which makes everything so easy!

I used Earth Safe Finishes Teal Shimmer Opaque to color the frame,

added some metallic paper corners and

used a Krylon Gold Leafing Pen along frame edge.

I placed a three dimensional

Snowman card saying "Merry Christmas"

on the inside of the frame!

I took an old shirt to give this a try...

I used freezer paper to create some stencils,

ironed them onto the shirt. I took a couple drops of

Earth Safe Finishes Colorant mixed it with a couple drops of

ESF Fabric Magic then added a couple drops of water...

Used a stencil brush, wiped the extra off onto paper towels

and then brushed the color onto the shirt...

Wow I gotta tell you I was impressed...

it came out soft to the touch and because of the

freezer paper being ironed onto the shirt

the detail of the designs came out crisp and clean...

The Sizzix Checkbook ScoreBoard

When I saw this great design I thought of so
many uses for it besides a
checkbook cover...

Pictured below is the Note Pad Cover
I made with the
Checkbook ScoreBoard Die.

I used Earth Safe Finishes Opaque Shimmers
in Gold, Silver and Copper to cover the
matboard pieces and let them dry.
I glued a piece of vintage lace to the top edge
and then assembled using brads.
I added lettering to say
"notes 2 remember"

On the inside I glued a notepad.

Sizzix Scoreboard Cupcake

You can use Earth Safe Finishes
on any surface and be sure to have
GREAT results...
look at the shimmer of the Mat Board
in the picture below...

I thought the Sizzix Cupcake Holder was a perfect
base to make a unique Pin Cushion.

I received the Cupcake Holder pre-cut on matboard
from Eileen Hull (the creator of the ScoreBoards)
as they are not yet available in stores,
(they will be arriving late November/early December)
but you can check out the Scoreboard Line of dies out at
Sizzix

I painted the inside & outside of the cupcake holder with
Earth Safe Finishes Shimmer Opaque Copper
Then on the inside I dry brushed
Earth Safe Finishes Shimmer Opaque Black
Let dry. Assemble cupcake using
The Ultimate Glue by API Crafter's Pick
overlapping edges where holes line up,
glue three buttons over holes.
Then I covered a 3" Styrofoam Ball with fabric
using The Ultimate Glue by API Crafter's Pick
Place a few glass marbles in the bottom of cupcake holder
to give it some needed weight
then glue covered Styrofoam ball into
Cupcake Holder to finish Pin Cushion.

Update old Planters

This molded plastic planter is definitely dated by the color
but still a perfectly usable planter if it were updated...
Earth Safe Finishes does it again!

I started with ESF Perfect Paint in Black to cover
the planter, I did 2 coats and let them dry in between.
Then I used 4 colors of ESF Shimmers to give it depth.
Finished with ESF Marine Varnish for
long lasting shine and protection.

Now go find something you can save from the landfill
and update it with Earth Safe Finishes!
You will be glad you did!

I cut a die with Freezer Paper &
ironed it onto a pair of little girl jeans...

Applied ESF Gold Shimmer and some glitter....

to several areas of the jeans for a great new look
any little girl would love to wear!

Sizzix Scoreboards and Earth Safe Finishes...

My friend Designer Eileen Hull has a new product line
with Sizzix called ScoreBoard.
They are dies that can cut matboard;
they are not available is store as yet so
she sent me a pre-cut Box with Flap (item #656137)
to try out....
they are so quick and easy to decorate and put together...
What a wonderful idea she had
to create dies to use with matboard!

I used Earth Safe Finishes
Clear Gel Medium, White Opaque Shimmer
and mixed in some
Terra Cotta Colorant
to cover the matboard.
Then I added some shading along the edges
with Black Opaque Shimmer,
letters to spell out "BOO",
fibers and a picture to finish it off.

I added some fabric to the steps with ESF Gel Medium
and put a trim around the edges.
I still need to do another coat of white paint
and varnish the chair
but I think it turned out
GREAT!

Wooden Drawing Mannequin

I absolutely love mannequins!
So when I found this wooden drawing mannequin
at IKEA I knew I had to do something with it.
I thought it would be a perfect base to apply ESF Shimmers to.

Just one coat of of ESF Shimmers in colors of:
Emerald, Magenta and Teal
gave the mannequin shimmer and depth.

I will add more to this and have more pictures posted soon!

Beth Wheeler's Earth Safe Finishes Painted Purse

I had a wonderful day yesterday catching up with designer friends
Beth Wheeler and Nancy Hoerner.

I was able to see Beth's Fabric Purse
she has on the Earth Safe Finishes Fabric Media Blog
and is pictured above.

I have to say that the picture does not do it
the justice it deserves,
in person you can see all of the shimmers in
the colors of the Earth Safe Finishes Shimmers.
The purse is so great that when people saw it
they suggested she go into the business of making purses
as they wanted one just like it.

Playing with Dye

Thought I would play with the dye I made for my flowers with
Earth Safe Finishes Colorant and water some more.
I placed a mask on white paper...

I Started spraying with the dye,

just a little to see how it worked on paper
since it worked so well on silk flowers.

I Pulled the mask up and it worked great.....

I could have sprayed more for an all over color
but I was just playing to check it out......
and liked the results.
Imagine just a couple drops of colorant
and a couple tablespoons of water,
you can make dye for everything for pennies.....

Then I tried the mask on black paper
and it worked great also......

Dying Flowers!

While this is not a Mixed Media project,
you will be able to use this technique is so many different ways,
I really wanted to share it with you.
My daughter got married this past weekend (August 1)
and I wanted to share a picture of the
center piece's & bridal bouquet.

I was not able to find flowers in the main color
of her wedding, turquoise, so I got a spray bottle,
Earth Safe Finishes Colorants and water
to make a dye......sprayed the flowers
and let them dry.....the flowers & bouquets
turned out great!

Mixed Media Collage

A Quick and Easy Collage
made by stamping into rolled out Makin's Air Dry Clay.
Fold up one edge and tear the other edge until you have a pleasing look.
Then apply Earth Safe Finishes Shimmer for color (let dry)!
Tear some mulberry paper &
cut some Magic Mesh then glue these onto mat board.
Glue clay on top then add domino (made from clay)
and some no hole glass beads.
Put into a Frame to finish!

Alter Card Stock with ESF

We all have have Card Stock that we will never use.
Lots of times we get a package of card stock because it it the only way to get the one
Card Stock in there you really want, and is filled with others you would never use.
Or you bought to much of a card stock and have some left over;
whatever the reason, it is just sitting never to be used for anything, until now!

Pictured above is one such piece of Card Stock and below is the process
to make it into something you will love to use in your ART!

Let's update that Card Stock with Earth Safe Finishes!

Supplies:

Old Card Stock
Earth Safe Finishes Gesso
Earth Safe Finishes Shimmers Opaque & Translucent colors of choice
Loew Cornell Paint Brushes
Optional:
Old Paper or Music Sheets
Rub On's
Glue Stick

Dry brush Gesso onto Card Stock.

Glue on some old papers or music if desired.

Brush Shimmers onto Card Stock, add more Gesso to get desired look.

Add a rub - on if desired.

The end result is a beautiful piece of Card Stock
that would be great for any project you choose to do.
